Since her 2004 retirement as one of the nation’s top school superintendents, Dr. Tyra Manning has devoted her energies to bringing hope to people struggling with mental health. Those who know her as a successful schoolteacher and administrator might be surprised to learn of her long-time battle with addictions and clinical depression, trials she faced both before and after her husband was killed in Vietnam. Dr. Manning defies the stereotypes associated with mental illness and has committed herself to serving others who deal with these issues.
Throughout her 40-year career, she dreamed of comforting those suffering in silence, reducing the stigma associated with mental illness, and opening doors to resources for support and treatment. Those dreams are becoming realities. Dr. Manning’s new book, “Where the Water Meets the Sand”, describes the devastation of losing a loved one, the time she spent in a psychiatric hospital, and the love and support that enabled her perseverance through the darkest of times.
